Duncan,

Thanks for your question.

The last English lady to win the European table tennis championship title was Jill Hammersley (now Mrs Jill Hammersley-Parker).

Jill won in 1976 when the tournament was held in Prague (Czechoslovakia).

The opponents she beat were...

Round 1 - Alica Grofova (Czechoslovakia) 14-21, 21-17, 21-16, 21-19

Round 2 - Agnes Simon (Fed.Rep.Germany) 21-19, 21-8, 21-14

Round 3 - Dubrakva Fabri (Yugoslavia) 21-16, 21-10, 21-17

Quarter-Final - Zoya Rudnova (USSR) 26-24, 24-26, 21-11, 10-21, 21-18

Semi-Final - Ann-Christin Hellman (Sweden) 21-11, 12-21, 21-16, 21-11

Final - Maria Alexandru (Romania) 23-21, 21-16, 17-21, 21-19

Jill was also runner-up in the next European Championship in 1978, and runner-up again in 1982.

Lisa Lomas was the last English lady to reach the final (1992), losing to Bettine Vriesekoop of the Netherlands.
